The year 2026 begins with the spectacular, cinematic capture of Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Adela Flores. This action also opens a new page in the history of modern world politics. Although Maduro is a murderous dictator, the U.S. military attack on Venezuelan territory is fraught with danger. In particular, it sends a signal to countries like Russia and China that attacks on countries with which they disagree are politically acceptable worldwide (Ukraine for Russia, Taiwan for China).
Maduro's capture is reminiscent of the similar capture of Manuel Noriega in December 1989 by US President George H. W. Bush. We'll have to see what happens next, but the planet is on high alert...
